Miscellany: Cyber-Buddy Explained
Supporting Our Classmates & Friends That Are Offline
Some of our Classmates & Friends don't have access to the Internet, and we refer to them as being Offline. While this condition creates extra work for us on this end, we don't want to treat these folks any differently than those who are Online. That is, we want to share with them as much information as we can, and to be certain that they each receive all of the important announcements about any reunion or other such event.
BTW, at the time our 25th Reunion in 1990, of the few people that had a computer, most likely none had even heard of the Internet, never mind had an email address or visited websites such as this for information.
We Need Help!
In an effort to help spread around the work-load created on this end to support our Offline Classmates & Friends, we recruit surrogates who act on behalf of these Offline folks by performing the tasks at this website for them and communicating information to and from them. We call these surrogates Cyber-Buddys and many Cyber-Buddys have several Offline people that they work with.
The work that our Cyber-Buddys perform really helps out on our end, as we now guess that there may be about 100 Offline Classmates & Friends. If we had to call [or mail] all of them ourselves the several times we may need to contact them over the next few months leading up to the 45th Reunion, that's an enormous amount of work! However, if we had say 25 Cyber-Buddys who worked with just 4 Offline folks each, that would translate this mountain of work to maybe a few calls a month per Cyber-Buddy. And if the Offline folks that a Cyber-Buddy supported were also their friends, then it's no work at all...
Becoming a Cyber-Buddy is a great way for you to help make our 45th Reunion a success! And it would be most appreciated from here!
How It Works
We'll find out that someone is Offline in one of two ways: someone [Online] who knows the person tells us that they are Offline, or one of our Super-Sleuths finds them in their searching efforts and we discover at that time that they are Offline.
Ideally, in the first case, the Online friend would become their Cyber-Buddy, but if they don't wish to we'll assign the Offline person to an available Cyber-Buddy. In the case of the Super-Sleuth, they may have also offered to be a Cyber-Buddy, but if not or if they already had enough people to manage we'd assign the Offline person to another Cyber-Buddy.
The Cyber-Buddy performs these simple tasks:
Completes the informational form to add the Offline person to our Directory and also uses that same form to make any updates/changes. This form, Adding Or Updating Information About An Offline Person, is much like the one that you completed at this website when you added yourself.
Then, when we send an email to the Offline person it will instead go to the Cyber-Buddy - but it will be addressed to the Offline person. The Cyber-Buddy would then contact the Offline person, communicate what the email was about and then, if there is a response from the Offline person, they would complete the same form [Adding Or Updating Information About An Offline Person] with the Offline person's response. Simple!
For example: Your name is Carol Santacross and you have two Offline friends: Liz Sullivan and Mary Coppolino. You would complete a form [Adding Or Updating Information About An Offline Person] for Liz and Mary and on that form you would identify yourself as their Cyber-Buddy. On our system we would setup Liz and Mary to have your email address. We would then send an email to the people named Liz Sullivan and Mary Coppolino confirming that their form was processed, but those emails would instead be directed to you.
Later, should we send any emails to Liz or Mary, you would receive them. Or if we did a bulk mailing [say to every Classmate], in this example, you would receive three emails: one for Carol Santacross one for Liz Sullivan and one for Mary Coppolino.
How Offline People Appear On The Directory
All of the information about these folks is managed exactly the same as those who are Online except for the Email column. An Offline person would have CB:xx coded in that column instead, where CB means they have a Cyber-Buddy and xx being the initials of their Cyber-Buddy, each of which is described in the table below.
